Clothes Not to Wear

The most important thing to consider in what clothes not to wear is, "where am I going"?  Situation appropriate is the buzzword here.  Hopefully you know your body type and what strategies to employ to balance your particular body shape.  The following are some what not to wear tips, specifically in a professional environment.

  • Cleavage – is always distracting.  Employ it when you want to distract someone, not when you want people to look at your face and hear what you’re saying.

  • Button-down shirts that offer peep-shows.  Not only is the wearer usually insecure that she’s flashing people, which she is, the people being flashed are focused on the bra/breast/stomach being flashed, instead of the cute person in the clothes.

  • Shorts, when large amounts of flesh are displayed (breasts, thighs, even upper arms), we tend to be fascinated by it.  Especially when everyone else in that space is covered.

  • Flip-flops – the noise alone is irritating.

  • Sandals are often questionable at the most conservative offices

  • Sheer clothing

  • Sleeveless tops or dresses (worn without a cardigan or blazer on top)

  • Any item that can be worn to the gym (sneakers, yoga pants, terrycloth wristbands, large shapeless t-shirts)

  • Anything too short, tight, or low-cut.  This includes jackets that are too small in the bust.  Even if you never intend to button your jacket, it must still be able to button in order for the proportion and shape to match your body.  Be sure to use a good tailor.

Hopefully, this will give you a good idea of what clothes not to wear when you're headed off to work!  Now that you have our what not to wear tips, take a look at our What to Wear Tips page on tips what TO wear!
